God, the Creator and Lord of our lives, has called our dear
Sr. M. Walfriede
Mag. pharm. Berta Nowotny
home on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 9:55 PM.
Sr. M. Walfriede was born on December 16, 1937, in Inzenhof near Güssing, Burgenland, as the eldest of three siblings. She lost her parents when she was only five years old. Her mother, Berta, died young from a serious illness, and her father, Robert, had to rejoin the war after his wife’s death and never returned. The girls grew up with various relatives. Sr. Walfriede was able to stay in her home village, where she was lovingly taken in by an uncle’s family.
The acquaintance with a sister of our congregation awakened the thought of entering a religious order in the student. In 1951, Sr. Walfriede came to the motherhouse as an aspirant. After graduating from the Kenyongasse secondary school, she was assigned to study pharmacy. She devoted herself to this task with great joy. Only then did she begin her novitiate and take her temporary vows in September 1965 and her perpetual vows in 1968.
From 1965, Sr. Walfriede completed a two-year internship in the “Apotheke zum römischen Kaiser” (Pharmacy to the Roman Emperor) in Wollzeile, Vienna-Innere Stadt. In order to later manage the pharmacy in the Hartmannspital, further years of practice were required. She was able to acquire valuable knowledge in the Ludwigsapotheke in Vienna-Simmering and remained connected to it for many more years. When a new pharmacy was built in a new wing of the Hartmannspital, she took over its management.
Sr. Walfriede was known for her open heart, her generosity, and her helpfulness. She shaped and promoted the togetherness in the community by generously using her talents. She enjoyed organizing festivals and celebrations in the community and also organized theater performances for many years.
In recent months, Sr. Walfriede was lovingly cared for in the nursing ward. “Jesus, I live for you” – this prayer was especially close to her heart from childhood and accompanied her on her way to her eternal home.
