My Impression of the UISG (Union of International Superiors General) Meeting in Rome
Theme: Consecrated Life: A Hope That Transforms.
This is the first meeting I was able to attend as Superior General of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity.
Upon entering the large hall, I immediately became aware of the diversity and vibrancy of this gathering. There was a sense of life and vitality in the great diversity. Besides the various skin colors of the sisters, the wide array of religious habits and clothing of the sisters from different religious communities worldwide was evident. I was assigned to table 1 out of 97 tables, each with 10 seats. It was one of the tables for “German-speaking” participants. Three tables were reserved for us German-speaking Superior Generals. From Austria, there were four of us.
Over 900 Superior Generals from 97 Countries
The presentations by various speakers strongly expressed the global and intercontinental nature of the event. The days were characterized by a religious church that goes to the edge of what’s possible and highlights the needs of suffering humanity. A flourishing religious world presented itself and called for support and cooperation. In contrast to this vibrant and growing religious world, we Europeans found ourselves facing more of a time of completion. It is important to us that we provide a dignified and appreciative life until the end for our elderly and sick religious members. The images of those religious women who lost their lives due to terror and cruel circumstances for their work and actions were deeply disturbing.
In all our efforts for good, we must not lose sight of the consecrated life. This was repeatedly mentioned in the lectures and in small groups. During group work, we found that 1/3 of the religious communities in the region of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Luxembourg are already led by a Superior General from another continent. This does not prevent us from living hope, giving hope, a hope that does not give up, but trusts completely in the Lord who works in our daily efforts and does His part. Through our presence, we want to proclaim the good news and hope even as smaller communities.
Through the union in the UISG, all orders are part of the work in the whole world and, through their synodality, set a strong and effective sign that transforms and gives many people support and hope.
Simultaneously with our meeting, the conclave took place. We felt very close to it and strongly supported the cardinals with our prayers. The joy was indescribably great when the white smoke was visible on all screens. This was expressed through cheers, singing, applause, and dancing.
On the last day, we walked through the holy door of Santa Maria Maggiore. We were able to pause briefly at Pope Francis’ tomb before continuing into the basilica to celebrate our closing Mass. This was filled with joy and gratitude for the shared time and exchange, but especially for our new Pope Leo XIV.
I returned to my community richly blessed, to continue strengthening the sisters in peace and hope.
